Did Apple rush the production on iPhone 4?

June 28, 2010 In Technology

iPhone 4Did anyone rush out to grab an iPhone 4 this week? Many, many of you did, and the same day reports were flying in of multiple problems that were experienced either through using the phone or just the overall manufacturing that seemed ‘shoddy’ to some users.

The main problem reported is the reception and how calls lose quality or even get cut off completely when gripping the phone in your left hand. The second complaint is how many screens had a weird yellow glow or smudge on the screen of the phone. Apparently these problems have been “addressed” by Apple in some way, though nothing that appears to be a permanent fix. Apple told users regarding the reception quality that they “shouldn’t hold the phone that way”, and the odd yellow smudge on the screen? The bonding substance they used to glue the screen together apparently hasn’t dried on some of the phones yet.

So with that said, Apple is apparently releasing a software update already–possibly this week–that could in fact fix the antenna issue. The other alternative is to just use a casing on the phone. So I’m left wondering if Apple had rushed the production line of the phones ever since that leak on Gizmodo in April, in order to meet people’s expectations that the new iPhone would be announced at the WWDC this year in June, and ship later in the month. Did they try to save time with careless attention to detail on certain areas of the phone, or are they jumping on the bandwagon and just producing phones that are not of top-notch quality? I’ll be upgrading in August, so we’ll see then how the iPhone 4 compares to the current models. Hopefully they will be in top shape.
